ISLAMABAD (Sarzameen News)- Today marks the 17th death anniversary of the Pakistani pop singer-songwriter Nazia Hassan.
Starting her career in the late 70s, at the age of 15, she was the youngest artist and the first Pakistani ever to win a Filmfare Award for the Best Playback Singer- Female.
Barrister by profession, Nazia did her LLB from London University. Working as a social worker she served for the United Nations, Department of Political and Security Council Affairs, and UNICEF.
Nazia‘s first album was ‘Disco Deewanay’ which was a hit in 14 countries in 1981. At that time, ‘Disco Deewanay’ was the best-selling album of Asian Pop Genre, and was a great hit in Russia, Latin America, West-Indies, India, and Pakistan. Nazia and Zohaib’s duo was one of the most successful of the time, and sold over 60 million records all over the world.
After losing her life to cancer in 2000, Nazia, for her great achievements and contributions, was presented the “Pride of Performance” award by the Government of Pakistan, which is the highest civil award of the country.
